What is an aquatic perfume?
The aquatic family is one of the youngest in modern perfumery. Unlike florals or orientals, which date back centuries, the aquatic perfume as we know it today is a 20th-century invention, made possible by chemical synthesis.
It all began in 1966 with Monsieur Rochas, who for the first time incorporated a marine note into a composition. But it was truly in 1988 that the aquatic revolution erupted, with the launch of Dior's Eau Sauvage Extrême, and especially in 1991 with Davidoff's Cool Water, a perfume that forever changed the codes of masculine perfumery. Behind this composition was perfumer Pierre Bourdon and the molecule Calone, synthesized in 1966 but little used until then, which gives that immediate impression of sea spray and cold water. Since then, the aquatic family has continuously evolved.
