The materials that make up woody perfumes for men all have a long history, and this slowness, this density, is reflected on the skin. How to choose your woody perfume sample for men?
Wood is everywhere in men's perfumery, so present that we hardly notice it anymore. Yet behind this generic word lie materials that have almost nothing in common. Confusing sandalwood and guaiac is a bit like confusing oak and bamboo: same family, totally different worlds.
Before choosing, the right question is not "woody or not woody," but "what is your relationship with wood?"
Some men seek warmth. Sandalwood, rosewood, amyris are for them: round, creamy materials that envelop without ever being heavy. Perfumes that can be worn without a second thought, that work in all circumstances and cross seasons without aging.
Others prefer dryness. Cedar, cypress, guaiac, Siam wood, these hard, almost mineral woods give compositions a particular rectitude and sharpness. On a masculine skin, these notes take on an almost sculpted dimension: a presence that is not necessarily noticed, but whose absence would be immediately perceived.
Finally, there are those who are attracted to smoky and earthy woodiness, the territory of vetiver. Roots, wet earth, cold smoke: it's the most complex woody note there is, the one that evolves the most on the skin and builds, hour after hour, a truly personal signature.
What all these woods have in common: they only truly reveal themselves after several hours on the skin. A quick test in a store will never tell the whole story. A sample worn for an entire day, yes.
